Affordable Care Act Working for PA,
Working for America

The Supreme Court of the United States upheld the Affordable Care Act in 2012. In the years since President Obama signed the landmark health care reform legislation into law, millions of Americans have benefitted from the cost savings, consumer protections and preventative health care measures contained in it.

Rather than celebrating the positive impact this law is having on the health and lives of Pennsylvanians, Gov. Tom Corbett's administration is working against its implementation in our state.

More than half the nation's governors are now taking advantage of the federal health care law to expand Medicaid coverage to the thousands of uninsured people they serve. But Gov. Tom Corbett refuses to accept billions of dollars in federal money to cover hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians and is instead spreading misinformation about its cost.

Gov. Corbett's political posturing is forcing:

  • Well over 500,000 Pennsylvanians to go without adequate health care coverage;

  • Thousands of workers to miss out on job opportunities in the health-care sector; and
  • Hundreds of Pennsylvania hospitals to lose financial relief for the uncompensated care that they must provide by law to people who can't afford to pay for it.

Under Medicaid expansion, the federal government would pay 100 percent of funding needed for the expansion through 2016, and no less than 90 percent after 2017. That's a nearly $40 billion dollar commitment from the federal Affordable Care Act to Pennsylvania and its uninsured citizens over the next 10 years.

We will all pay the price for Gov. Corbett's refusal to join the other governors who are actively implementing health care reform in their states.
