October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In Pennsylvania, 27 women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer. Rep. McIlvaine Smith says we need to not only encourage women to do monthly self-exams and get annual mammograms, but the state needs to make sure once a woman is diagnosed, she has access to medical care. - 10/7/2008

Rep. Barb McIlvaine Smith, D-Chester, joins fellow Pennsylvania lawmakers to support a proposed voter referendum calling for a citizens’ constitutional convention. If approved, the convention would be conducted by elected citizen delegates, who would convene and develop recommendations for reform to be considered by state lawmakers. - 8/5/2008


Rep. Barb McIlvaine Smith recently received the “Cyber Families Leadership Award” from the Pennsylvania Families for Public Cyber Schools for her support and efforts to keep cyber schools viable in the Commonwealth. In accepting the award, Rep. McIlvaine Smith noted education should not come in as “one size fits all,” and complimented cyber schools for creating an atmosphere where each student has the best chance to succeed. - 5/15/2008


As chairwoman of the House Subcommittee on Special Education, Rep. McIlvaine Smith is fighting to help those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. She will hold an April 8 hearing on transition services.
