Rep. Vanessa Brown announces four upcoming events

PHILADELPHIA, March 17 – State Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown, D-Phila., has announced a series of upcoming events she will be hosting over the next three weeks.

A community briefing will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 26 at the Christian Stronghold Church, 4701 Lancaster Ave., Philadelphia.

Scheduled to join Brown for the community discussion on voter rights, police district information, and upcoming city parks events and programs are City Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, Police Captain Altovise Love-Craighead and former City Deputy Commissioner Dennis Lee.

Brown's annual Spring Fling and Egg Hunts will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 4 at Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse, 3500 Reservoir Drive, East Fairmount Park, Philadelphia.

Brown's staff will provide information on a variety of state programs, including CHIP, the state's health insurance program for children; and the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program for seniors and some other eligible citizens.

Healthy food tutorials, exercise demonstrations, arts and crafts, face painting, a silly hat parade and an egg hunt for children 3 to 12 will be among the offerings.

Brown will also conduct her annual Prom Safety Event and Suit and Gown Giveaway 3 to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11 – and 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 12 – at the Greater Bible Way Temple, 1461 N. 52nd St.

Prom event attendees will receive information on prom safety – including a review of the state's DUI rules for underage drinking and the Good Samaritan Law, which may allow a student to report an incident of alcohol overdose without risk of legal consequences to themselves.

"Spring is a very active time in the district," Brown said. "I look forward to hosting these annual events like the Spring Fling and the prom giveaway because they are proof that spring is indeed coming.

"I am also thankful for the support of our local officials who see the need to hold occasional community gatherings to allow an opportunity to share concerns and are willing to participate in my occasional community briefing events."

Brown is also accepting nominations for her 2015 Legislative Image Awards. Residents of the 190th Legislative District are invited to nominate local women who have made a positive and quantifiable impact within the community and/or the individual’s spheres of influence.

The awards ceremony will be held 3 – 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 at Christian Stronghold Church, 4701 Lancaster Ave.

For more information on any of these events, or to nominate a woman for the image awards, constituents should contact Brown's office at (215) 870-6615.
