Register your elementary school child for my summer reading challenge
State Rep Vanessa Brown, D-Phila., is urging parents to register their elementary school children in the Summer Reading Games, titled “On your Mark, Get Set, Read!” through her district office.
I am inviting all children to continue reading throughout the summer months,” Brown said. “During the program children must commit to reading one hour each day beginning June 27 through Friday, Aug. 5.”
Children in grades kindergarten through eighth are eligible to participate. Brown said many elementary school students will be given a reading diary and game board to participate in the reading program. Specific instructions for the participant are in each reading packet.
The Philadelphia lawmaker said students who successfully participate in the challenge will be recognized at the end of the summer.
“The goal of the program is for children to read when school is out for the summer and ultimately benefit in the long-term academically,” Brown said. “I firmly believe that reading is the key to future success in both school and life, and that's why I introduced H.R. 900.”
Children must register by either calling or stopping by Brown’s office to obtain a registration form. Parents also may download it from Brown's webpage at www.pahouse.com/brown.
