Burns: Scholarship available to graduating seniors

EBENSBURG, Jan. 11 – State Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria, is reminding graduating high school seniors and their families about the availability of the 2019 Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship, which awards a four-year scholarship to two students preparing to enter post-secondary education.

“This is another resource available to students and many may not know about it,” Burns said. “These scholarships are privately funded by individual and corporate donors, so no tax dollars are involved. I encourage all interested and eligible 72nd Legislative District residents to apply.”

Burns said the application deadline is Friday, March 1, and applicants must be Pennsylvania high school residents who have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, plan to attend a state college, university or career school as a full-time student, and demonstrate leadership and community service. Other factors considered for the award are extracurricular activities and financial need.

Burns said the scholarship is administered through the Foundation for Enhancing Communities and the application can be found on its website at www.tfec.org. This year’s application process also includes a 500-word essay in which applicants are asked to imagine themselves as a political candidate.

“Every day I go to work for the people, helping them to navigate the challenges of government, while fighting for issues that matter and working to ensure that what's important here doesn’t get lost in Harrisburg,” Burns said. “This essay is a great way to engage the minds of a new generation of leaders and get them interested in, and passionate about, creating better communities here and across the commonwealth.”

Scholarships are awarded through an independent panel of judges chosen by the foundation.

Applicants also may contact Burns’ Ebensburg office at (814) 472-8021 for help with this or any other state-related matter.
