Burns: $50,000 in funding awarded to Loretto Borough for traffic and pedestrian safety project

HARRISBURG, May 29 –$50,000 in state transportation funds designed to improve pedestrian and driver safety has been awarded to Loretto Borough, state Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria, announced today.

The funds will be used to install pedestrian crossing and detectable warning devices, pavement markings, a level walkway, and flashing warning signs at Syberton Road from Saint Michael School to the Basilica of Saint Michael Church.

Burns said he met with school officials, who voiced concerns over student safety when crossing the street with the speed of drivers within the school zone.

“After learning of this dangerous situation, I set up a meeting with PennDOT officials about improving safety for the children of Saint Michael’s School and members of the church,” Burns said. “PennDOT and Loretto Borough agreed on a solution – and this state grant makes it a reality.

“I thank the Loretto Borough council for their willingness to apply for the funds, making the community a better place to live,” he said.

The program is competitive, with Burns noting grants were awarded to 38 municipalities to fund 50 safety projects out of a total of 134 applications submitted.
