Rep. Paul Costa, D-34th,recently welcomed players with the Big 33 to Harrisburg. Originating in 1957, the Big 33 Football Classic is an all-star scholastic football game highlighting Pennsylvania’s and Ohio’s outstanding high school athletes. It is run by the Big 33 Scholarship Foundation which helps provide academic scholarships and support for children with special needs. Rep. Costa presents pediatric Drs. Debra Bogen and Alejandro Hoberman of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine with a grant for the diagnosis and treatment of asthma. The ceremony took place at the Children’s Hospital in the Turtle Creek Valley, where the incidence of asthma was found to be twice the national average.

Rep. Costa (at right) joined state Rep. Jane Orie, R-Allegheny, and Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. at the first Western Pennsylvania School Safety and Violence Prevention Convention and School Safety Expo on Sept. 8. The day-long event featured the collective expertise of national, state and local professionals who acquainted local educators, administrators, parents, students and community members with the resources available to assist schools in preventing school violence and making schools safer.

Rep. Costa recently joined fellow Allegheny County lawmakers Reps. Tony Deluca (right) and Don Walko (back) at a news conference to outline legislation that would benefit customers of Pennsylvania stores and restaurants by eliminating expiration dates on gift certificates. Deluca is the prime sponsor of the bill. 
By law, the money paid for unredeemed gift certificates must be turned into the state Treasurers Bureau of Unclaimed Property. To see if the state has any money waiting for you from an unused gift certificate, contact the Bureau of Unclaimed Property at 1-800-222-2046.
