I was eager to try to advance legislation, H.B. 1081, which would exempt volunteer emergency responders from paying fees that total more than $47 for state and federal background clearances. On May 29, I joined fellow Allegheny Democratic Reps. Paul Costa, Dom Costa, Bill Kortz and Harry Readshaw as well as volunteer firefighters and emergency responders at Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department, to promote the legislation. The financial burden on volunteers was an unintended consequence of changes to the state’s child abuse laws, and H.B. 1081, would begin to right that wrong.
