Kortz announces October Senior Fair and shredding event
DRAVOSBURG, Aug. 26 – State Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Allegheny, announced that he will host his annual Senior Fair and shredding event in October.
Kortz's ninth annual Senior Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Broughton Volunteer Fire Department, 1030 Cochrans Mill Road, South Park. His fourth annual shred-it event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 15, at the West Mifflin #3 Volunteer Fire Company, 3722 Rodeo Drive, West Mifflin.
The free Senior Fair will feature representatives from the state's departments of Aging and Human Services, as well as from local and county agencies and vendors who provide services to seniors.
Attendees will be able to receive a free flu shot if they present their Medicare card, and blood pressure screenings will be available. Also, vaccinations for shingles and whooping cough will be administered. However, PRE-REGISTRATION is a must. "I enjoy sponsoring these events because so much can be accomplished," Kortz said. "The Senior Fair allows people to get vaccinations when they are most effective -- before winter sets in and before flu season hits full stride. The event in South Park also links residents with agencies geared to assist older citizens."
Kortz said unused or unwanted medications also can be brought to the Senior Fair for safe disposal.
The free Oct. 15 shredding event enables local residents to dispose safely and securely of unneeded personal papers containing confidential information such as health or military records, Social Security numbers or financial information. There is a three-box limit per person.
"Consumer fraud and identity theft are becoming rampant in our communities," Kortz said. "Shredding sensitive documents is the best way for consumers to protect themselves against such crimes."
