HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP LETTERS
February 16, 2007

Rep. Bill DeWeese, Majority Leader
Rep. Keith McCall, Majority Whip

Making government more open to the people

Make no mistake - things have changed in Harrisburg. With House Democrats in the Majority, state government is more open and transparent and the Speaker's Commission on Legislative Reform is working hard to lay out a plan for the future. We're proud to work with the commission, but we're also taking steps of our own.

We're offering streaming video of all floor proceedings when the House is in session and voting results as soon as each day's session ends on the House Democratic Access Center, and that's just the beginning. Check back often and stay tuned for more information, including live footage of Appropriations Committee hearings on the state budget proposal.

Improving access to quality health care

When you or a loved one is sick, there's nothing more important than getting medical care, but House Democrats think the health-care system itself is due for a checkup.

House Majority Policy Committee Chairman Todd Eachus is kicking off a statewide tour to hear from doctors, nurses, hospital officials, insurance companies, and, most importantly, patients to find out more about health care in the state and look at the entire system as a whole to make sure you get the care you deserve.

The hearings started this week with Regional Chairman Marc Gergely in McKeesport. Click here to hear what committee members have to say. There are more hearings coming up on long-term care, nursing shortages, prescription medicine and a lot more (including finding out how we can pay for it all). So stay tuned!

Crafting a common-sense spending plan

Coming up next week - and after being delayed by a few feet of ice and snow -- Majority Appropriations Chairman Rep. Dwight Evans kicks off the House budget hearings that will give legislators and the public input on the final budget legislation. Click here to see what's on deck.
