HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP LETTERS
April 20, 2007

Rep. Bill DeWeese, Majority Leader
Rep. Keith McCall, Majority Whip

House Democrats working to protect your family

There are really only three kinds of people who should care about nurses being forced to work mandatory overtime:

1. Nurses

2. People who care about nurses

3. People who get sick

If you fit into any of those categories then mandatory overtime for nurses affects you and your loved ones. House Democrats want to end this unsafe practice. This week the House Labor Relations Committee moved Rep. Dan Surra's proposal to end mandatory overtime for nurses, and the bill should be voted next week. Want to help protect nurses and patients like you? You can become a citizen-sponsor of H.B. 834 at www.pahouse.com.

Similarly, we all care about volunteer fire and ambulance companies having enough money to maintain operations. Even if you live in a city with paid emergency services, the estimated $6 BILLION per year volunteer services save taxpayers helps your bottom line. For people without paid fire and ambulance companies, volunteers are literally the difference between life and death.

House Democrats have led the charge in recent years to help our volunteers keep the trucks, engines and ambulances rolling with a $25 million annual grant program. Now, Rep. Bryan Lentz wants to make sure the program stays put. His proposal - H.B. 906 -- would reauthorize the grants and make the application process in the first two years more seamless. Click here to hear the facts from Lentz about how House Democrats are standing up for volunteer emergency services.
