State budget coming into focus

Next week Majority Democrats will lead the House of Representatives' debate on crafting the 2007-08 state budget. This important first step in the process gives every House member the opportunity to express his or her priorities for the coming year, whether education improvements, health care or energy independence.

Meantime, with this week's overwhelming disapproval of local referendums on Act 1, it's certain that several proposals will be discussed this session with the goal of further property tax reductions beyond the expected $1 billion through slots gaming. To get the discussion moving, soon we plan to introduce a simple and straightforward plan - a one-half percent increase in the state's sales tax to generate $712 million in homeowner property tax reductions statewide.
