HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP LETTERS
January 4, 2008

Rep. Bill DeWeese, Majority Leader
Rep. Keith McCall, Majority Whip

A new year, a greater resolve

Each new year provides the chance to refocus on the things we'd like to change or accomplish in our own lives and, in the case of the legislature, what lawmakers want to accomplish on behalf of the people we represent.

House Democrats worked hard in 2007 to reform the way the Pennsylvania legislature does business. The new and sturdy foundation we laid will help build and fortify the issues we seek to resolve in 2008, like affordable health care for all Pennsylvanians, property tax reform and energy independence.

The New York Times commented this week on two new studies that found that people who are uninsured suffer far worse outcomes from things like heart disease, diabetes and cancer than those who are insured. If to this you say "no kidding," then we are on the same page. House Democrats are working on a plan to reform health care in a way that would reduce the "far worse outcomes" for hundreds of thousands of uninsured working Pennsylvanians.

We also enter 2008 with a barrel of oil reaching $100 for the first time and prices at the pump steadily exceeding the $3/gallon mark. House Democrats again are focusing on investing in Pennsylvania (instead of sending $30 billion per year to foreign interests) by promoting the use of alternative fuels and promoting clean energy such as solar, wind, hydro-electric and other cutting-edge technologies that seek to reduce the cost of energy.

House Democrats are determined in 2008 to resolve these issues and more.
