Representative Mike O’Brien is completing his first term representing the 175th Legislative District, which runs from the lower Northeast to South Philadelphia through the River Wards of Central Philadelphia. Mike lives in Fishtown with his wife Rita, a Philadelphia schoolteacher. They have two children, Bridget, who is working toward her Ph.D. at Notre Dame, and Michael, who is in his senior year at the University of Miami studying Marine Biology. As a freshman, Mike sponsored 19 pieces of legislation, two of which have been signed into law. And he co-sponsored more than 700 bills important to Philadelphia and its people. Aside from his work in re-siting Philadelphia's two stand-along slot casinos from along the waterfront to areas that make better land-use sense, Mike has concerned his legislative efforts in environmental issues, drafting legislation to address non-indigenous nuisance species in the Delaware, Schyukill and other rivers and the effects of prescription drugs on drinking water. He also is a leading advocate for women’s health issues. Mike serves on the House Urban Affairs, Gaming Oversight, Liquor Control, State Government, Intergovernmental Affairs and Policy committees. |
