VOICE YOUR SUPPORT FOR A NATURAL-GAS SEVERANCE TAX IN PENNSYLVANIA

Every major natural-gas producing state in the nation – except Pennsylvania – has a severance tax to ensure a safe, healthy and educated state for drillers to do business with. When those states ship their natural gas to us, we pay for those states’ windfalls. Here in Pennsylvania, however, where Harrisburg chooses special-interests over people, we don't benefit similarly. Our Commonwealth has lost more than $2.3 billion dollars -- about the size of the current deficit -- due to the lack of a responsible severance tax on drillers.

Pennsylvania is unique in that it has a constitutional claim to our natural resources. Article I, Section 27, “Natural Resources and the Public Estate,” of the Pennsylvania Constitution states:

Pennsylvania’s public natural resources are the common property of all the people, including generations yet to come. As trustee of these resources, the Commonwealth shall conserve and maintain them for the benefit of all the people.

As powerful as the statement is, it is ignored in the sweetheart tax breaks handed to out-of-state and special interests since the Marcellus Shale drilling boom began. Fill out the form below to let Harrisburg know that it’s past time for Pennsylvania to benefit from the harvest of its natural resources.

Email Body:

Please vote to enact a reasonable and adequate natural-gas severance tax in Pennsylvania. Faced with a run-away deficit and credit downgrade, we simply cannot afford to give away our valuable natural resources any longer. This is recurring revenue that will put Pennsylvania on better financial footing.

It’s past time for Pennsylvania to join othe states. I stand with the majority of citizens who eagerly await an enacted natural-gas severance tax.
