State Rep. Pat Harkins |
House unanimously passes Harkins’ bill to protect Great Lakes
HARRISBURG, Jan. 28 – The state House today unanimously passed state Rep. Pat Harkins’ bill (H.B. 1705) that would authorize Pennsylvania to join the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact. The legislation now moves to the state Senate for consideration.
Harkins said the bill would give Pennsylvania the opportunity to join the effort to protect the health of Lake Erie and the other Great Lakes.
“The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River ecosystem is the largest concentration of unfrozen fresh surface water in the western hemisphere and it is our duty to develop and adopt sensible water management of the basin,” said Harkins, D-Erie.
The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact aims to develop an agreement among the Great Lake states and Canada for management of the Great Lakes resource.
