Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program deadline extended

If circumstances have prevented you from filing for the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program, you will be happy to learn there is still time to apply for your rebate. The deadline to get your application in for a rebate on taxes or rent paid in 2006 has been extended until Dec. 31, 2007. My office is assisting many constituents in the Third District as they prepare their applications.

Some changes in the program this year are especially helpful for our senior population. The maximum rebate available to both homeowners and renters has been increased from $500 to $650. The legislature has increased the maximum household income eligibility limit for homeowners from $15,000 to $35,000. However, the maximum household income eligibility for renters remains at $15,000.

A number of senior citizens assume incorrectly that their household income is too much to qualify for the rebate program. Applicants need to be aware that they can exclude one-half of their Social Security, Supplemental Security or federal railroad retirement benefits when calculating their income. That means some homeowners whose total income is as much as $40,000 or more may still qualify for a rebate.

Another point to consider is that applicants can have their rebate check electronically deposited to their bank account rather than having a check sent to their home. This is a very safe and convenient way to receive your rebate.

Any constituent who needs assistance in applying for a rebate can stop by my office. One of my staff members will assist you with the application. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also, if you are a first-time applicant or did not receive the application packet in the mail this year, we have extra booklets available at the office.

I recommend that you file as soon as possible so your check can be in the mail sooner. Applicants need to include copies of any income forms that apply to their federal income tax filing for last year, as well as copies of their 2006 property tax bill receipt from the county or municipality and from the school district in which they live. Renters may also be eligible for a rebate, but must have their landlord fill out and sign a rent certificate form.

Remember, my office is here to help. If you think you qualify for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program, please stop by my office at 2335 W. 38th St. or call 814-835-2880 for help applying. The Third Legislative District I represent includes McKean and Waterford boroughs and townships, Franklin Township, most of Millcreek Township (except Belle Valley) and the fourth voting precinct of Fairview Township. If you do not live in one of these areas, the state representative who covers your area should be glad to offer assistance.
