Alternative fuel grant awarded to Millcreek Township School District
ERIE, Oct. 12 – State Rep. John Hornaman, D-Erie, today announced nearly $20,000 in state grant funding has been awarded to Erie County’s Millcreek Township School District.
Hornaman said the $18,326 grant will be used to purchase 184,000 gallons a year of alternative fuel for the school district’s fleet of 95 school buses.
“Pennsylvania has made great strides in recent years to ramp up its alternative energy capacity and use,” Hornaman explained. “We at the state level have implemented great grant programs to help organizations and businesses take advantage of new and alternative sources of fuel, to ultimately reduce our dependency on unstable Middle East oil sources and to rely more on clean and renewable domestic fuel sources – much of which can be produced right here in Pennsylvania.”
The fuel being purchased by the school district contains 5 percent biodiesel, which is made from soybean oil, Hornaman said. Legislation pending in the General Assembly’s current Special Session on Energy would substantially increase the amount of biodiesel and other biofuels produced in Pennsylvania, creating jobs and boosting the state’s agriculture industry.
The Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant Program, which is funding the Millcreek Township School District grant, encourages Pennsylvania’s public and private organizations to transition to home-grown, alternative sources of fuel, helping to create and expand the market for alternative fuels produced in Pennsylvania.
