Longietti bill naming bridge after fallen Marine goes to governor
HARRISBURG, June 22 – State Rep. Mark Longietti's legislation that would name a Mercer County bridge after a local Marine killed in Afghanistan was approved by the state House of Representatives today.
The legislation (H.B. 988) now goes to Gov. Ed Rendell for his expected signature. The span to be designated the Sgt. David W. Wallace III "Walleye" Memorial Bridge carries Walnut Street over the Shenango River in Sharpsville.
"I'm looking forward to the governor signing the bill so people in Sergeant Wallace's hometown of Sharpsville will have a memorial that honors this young man who laid down his life for his country," Longietti said.
Wallace, who was born and raised in Sharpsville, was killed by an improvised explosive device on Jan. 27 while serving as a combat engineer.
The bill has been supported by Sharpsville Mayor Kenneth P. Robertson and state Sen. Robert D. Robbins, Longietti said.
The House had approved the bill in April. It was amended in the Senate to include Wallace's nickname at the request of his mother, Carol Wallace.
