Gibbons wants to quiet loud noise
HARRISBURG, April 30 – State Rep. Jaret Gibbons wants to protect the public from “noise nuisances” coming from motor vehicles. He is proposing legislation that would make the use of loud amplification systems illegal in motor vehicles.
“If the noise, be it music or exhaust systems, can be heard from more than 50 feet away of any motor vehicle, whether it's moving or parked, it is an annoyance to the public,” Gibbons said. “And, it's a hazardous distraction that not only can cause a lapse in concentration, but also make it hard to hear the sirens of emergency vehicles."
The legislation includes any mechanical or non-mechanical sound-making devices.
Gibbons said his legislation would make enforcement easier because it would establish a statewide standard.
“The current system of noise ordinances that vary from municipality to municipality – most of which are not enforced – is ineffective,” Gibbons said. “With this statewide standard in place, any law-enforcement agent in any jurisdiction could cite the person or people responsible.”
Gibbons said the legislation already has 26 co-sponsors.
