Gibbons: Wampum Borough receives $600,000 low-interest loan

for sewer upgrade

HARRISBURG, July 20 – State Rep. Jaret Gibbons today announced that Wampum Borough will receive a $601,332 low-interest state loan for a sewer upgrade that will enable local businesses to create jobs and stop sewage from leaking into public areas

"Expanding the system will remove limits on local businesses to grow and create jobs, as well as improve public safety," Gibbons said. "In addition, the local economy will immediately benefit from the 12 construction-related jobs that will be needed."

Gibbons said the sewer upgrade will allow Universal Refractories Corp. to invest $330,000 to expand its facilities. The company's previous expansions were limited by the inability of the existing sewer system to handle additional discharge.

"Upgrading the system will allow existing businesses to remain in our community and will remove a hurdle for new companies to locate here," he said.

The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority approved the loan to replace 7,854 feet of sewer mains and improve the manholes. The 20-year Pennvest loan will have an interest rate of 1.5 percent for the first five years and 3 percent for the remaining years.

Pennvest is an independent state agency offering low-interest loans and grants to communities throughout Pennsylvania to fund sewer, stormwater and drinking water maintenance and improvement projects. It was created by the General Assembly in 1988.
