Local boroughs receive nearly $15K in recycling grants

HARRISBURG, Oct. 30 – State Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-Lawrence/Beaver/Butler, announced the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recently awarded grants to two local boroughs.

Ellwood City Borough, Lawrence County, received a grant of $10,270 for recycling 664.9 tons in 2006.

Economy Borough, Beaver County, received a grant of $4,488 for recycling 447.1 tons in 2006.

Gibbons said the grants were awarded as part of the state's Recycling Performance Grant Program and are calculated based on the total tons recycled in one calendar year and the municipality's population.

"Programs like these help to inspire our local communities to recycle and stay 'green,'" Gibbons said. "I'm proud that our local boroughs are taking advantage of the opportunities to fund recycling efforts and protect our environment."

Gibbons said the program provides incentive to help Pennsylvania communities increase the amount of materials recovered through recycling and promote economic growth in the Commonwealth through job creation and market expansion.
