Lawrence County receives $16,000 state grant
HARRISBURG, Dec. 18 – State Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-Lawrence/Beaver/Butler, announced today that Lawrence County is receiving a $16,193 grant for its recycling efforts.
Gibbons said the grant amount is based on Lawrence County's population and the 2,087.5 tons it recycled in 2007.
"This grant is important because it brings thousands of dollars back into Lawrence County and the program," Gibbons said. "Many people in Lawrence County are taking the extra step to recycle and this grant is a reward for their hard work. This extra funding will help us continue our efforts and help protect our environment."
The grant is provided by the Recycling Performance Grant Program administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The program helps local governments like Lawrence County to expand recycling programs and create jobs and market growth. The state's recycling industry has more than 3,240 recycling and reuse businesses, generates $18.4 billion in gross annual sales and employs more than 81,000 people.
According to the Department of Environmental Protection:
-- Every pound of steel recycled saves enough energy to light a 60-watt bulb for more than 26 hours.
-- Every ton of glass recycled saves the equivalent of 9 gallons of fuel oil.
-- Recycling just one aluminum can saves enough electricity to light a 100-watt bulb for 3.5 hours.
