Matzie tours newly remodeled Shop 'N Save

AMBRIDGE, March 16 – State Rep. Robert F. Matzie, D-Allegheny/Beaver, along with House Appropriations Committee Chairman Dwight Evans, recently toured the newly remodeled Shop 'N Save grocery store in Ambridge.

"I'm very excited about what we saw during our tour," Matzie said. "Owner Phil Safran has done a great job with the remodel, and I know he will continue to provide residents of Ambridge and surrounding areas with the best possible service."

Matzie said his visit to Shop 'N Save occurred during the store's grand reopening week.

The store is a recipient of funding from the Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative, a program developed by Evans, D-Phila., to improve access to supermarkets in underserved communities.

FFFI is a public/private partnership seeded with $30 million from Pennsylvania that was leveraged by The Reinvestment Fund to create a $120 million initiative for Commonwealth grocers. Other partners in the statewide program are The Food Trust and the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.

As of September 2009, FFFI had committed $59.7 million in grants and loans to 78 food market projects across the state, ranging in size from 1,000 square feet to 69,000 square feet. In total, these projects are expected to preserve or create 4,860 jobs and more than 1.5 million square feet of fresh food retail space across Pennsylvania.
