House adopts Ramaley resolutions honoring civic-awareness programs
HARRISBURG, June 26 – A pair of resolutions introduced by state Rep. Sean Ramaley, D-Beaver, honoring Pennsylvania American Legion programs that help teenagers develop constructive attitudes toward the American form of government were unanimously adopted by the House this week.
House Resolution 769 recognizes the Pennsylvania American Legion Keystone Boys State Program; H.R. 770 recognizes the Pennsylvania American Legion Keystone Girls State Program.
Both programs, held the week of June 22-27 at Shippensburg University, help students develop an interest in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship through a variety of activities.
"These hands-on programs help our youth understand how our two-party system of government works," Ramaley said. "The skills they learn through the week will improve their ability to lead and help them in whichever career path they follow."
High school principals and guidance counselors select students for participation in these programs based on their displayed leadership qualities, high moral character and their academic standing. Students form and operate government at the municipal, county and state levels, as well as organize under two fictitious political parties.
Ramaley attended the Keystone Boys State Program in 1992, and was selected as one of two participants to represent Pennsylvania at the American Legion Boys' Nation program, which is held annually in Washington, D.C. In addition, he served 10 years on the staff of the Keystone Boys State Program, serving as assistant director, senior counselor and chairman of the Boys' Nation selection committee.
