House adopts Ramaley
resolution designating September 'Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month'
HARRISBURG, July 3 – The House unanimously adopted a resolution (H.R. 640) offered by state Rep. Sean Ramaley, D-Beaver/Allegheny, designating September 2008 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
Ramaley offered the resolution to not only support women who are struggling with the disease, but also to raise awareness.
"According to the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer-related death among women, with an estimated 15,000 women expected to die from it this year," Ramaley said. "A woman has the best chance of survival if the cancer is caught early, which is why I hope my resolution will encourage women to get tested."
Nine out of 10 women in the United States treated for early ovarian cancer will live longer than five years after the cancer is found.
Ramaley offered his resolution in memory of his aunt Gwen Kordalski who passed away in December 2005 after a three-and-a half-year battle with ovarian cancer.
