Matzie to 'Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer'

HARRISBURG, July 19 – State Rep. Robert F. Matzie, D-Allegheny/Beaver, will participate in the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition's 2012 Home Run Derby at 11 a.m. Friday.

The event, dubbed Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer, is Pennsylvania's only statewide home run derby. Matzie will participate in the event held at Consol Energy Park, home of the Washington Wild Things minor league baseball team, in Washington.

Matzie’s team has dedicated $500 to the cause.

"Thirty-two women in Pennsylvania are told they have breast cancer each day," Matzie said. "As a son, husband and father of a daughter, raising awareness about self-examination and finding a cure is important to me personally. If I can raise that awareness through participating in this type of event while at the same time raising money for the cause it's a win-win situation."

Matzie said his team will take on a team organized by state Rep. Brandon Neuman, D-Washington.

All money raised through the Home Run Derby stays in the state and allows the PBCC to continue supporting and serving Pennsylvania breast cancer survivors and their families.
