Bennington bill would place Pa. laws online for free
HARRISBURG, April 9 – State Rep. Lisa Bennington, D-Allegheny, is introducing legislation that would place all of Pennsylvania’s consolidated and unconsolidated statutes online. Pennsylvania is the only state in the country not to provide free access to its laws online.
"As we continue to examine ways to foster a more open and transparent government, I believe it is important that we ensure the general public has free online access to our state laws," Bennington said.
As a family law attorney, Bennington has heard the pleas of both her colleagues and constituents who do not want to subscribe to costly Web-based subscription services or purchase the complete set of statutes for more than $1,000.
In this era of advanced technology, Bennington's H.B. 976 is aimed at providing all citizens with free access to Pennsylvania's laws in a format that they can easily use.
