Allegheny County lawmakers honor fallen Pittsburgh police officers

HARRISBURG, June 30 – Allegheny County state Reps. Dom Costa, Dan Deasy, Don Walko and Harry Readshaw honored fallen Pittsburgh police officers Eric Kelly, Steve Mayhle and Paul Sciullo on the floor of the state House of Representatives today.

"The tears we shed today will eventually be replaced with the lasting memories of officers Kelly, Mayhle and Sciullo, who were true to their duty and served the people of Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania with courage, honesty and respect," said Costa on the House floor. "If we adopt their qualities of honesty, respect, family and faith in our everyday lives, then these men will live on forever."

On April 4, Mayhle, Kelly and Sciullo responded to a domestic dispute in Stanton Heights. A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest armed with more firepower than a police officer carries was lying in wait – and took the lives of the three officers.

House members Deasy, Walko and Readshaw each presented House resolutions honoring the police officers, which were unanimously adopted.

"Once again, because of a tragic loss of life do we consider and appreciate the dedication, conscientiousness and dangers experienced by all law enforcement officers on a daily basis," said Readshaw. "We must express our thanks and understanding to the families of all fallen officers. They are gone but must not be forgotten."

"Police officers Kelly, Mayhle and Sciullo were united in the brotherhood of law enforcement and will forever be united by the tragic events of April 4. We will never forget the sacrifice they made to ensure the safety of everyone in that neighborhood," Deasy said.

Representing the fallen police officers' families on the House floor were Pittsburgh Deputy Chief Paul Donaldson and Assistant Police Chief William Bochter. Also in attendance were Pittsburgh Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 1 Vice President Chuck Hanlon and Pennsylvania State Fraternal Order of Police Financial Secretary Joseph Regan.
