Bennington applauds availability of laws online
HARRISBURG, July 13 – State Rep. Lisa Bennington, D-Allegheny, is praising a Senate move that makes Pennsylvania’s laws available online for residents to access for free.
Bennington said the posting is due to a rules change in the state Senate that requires all acts and statutes to be placed on the Internet beginning today. Last month, legislation (H.B. 976) that Bennington introduced that would place a requirement to have statutes posted on the Internet in state law passed the House unanimously.
“While I wholeheartedly support the Senate rules change expanding access to the Commonwealth’s laws, I will continue to push ahead to have my bill enacted, making it a requirement under the law,” Bennington said. “This is an enormous leap forward in the reform movement that has progressed in the House; I am glad the Senate is now taking part.”
Bennington, a family law attorney, said many of her colleagues and clients have wanted access to state laws, but became disillusioned when they were required to pay for costly subscriptions to access the statutes or purchase volumes containing the statutes at a hefty price.
The Bennington legislation was referred to the Senate Rules and Executive Nomination Committee on June 30.
