House adopts Frankel resolution commemorating 60th anniversary of Israel’s birth

HARRISBURG, May 19 – State Rep. Dan Frankel, D-Allegheny, announced that the House of Representatives unanimously adopted his resolution (H.R. 718) commemorating the 60th anniversary of the birth of Israel.

Frankel said that the people of Israel declared themselves an independent and sovereign state 60 years ago in Tel Aviv, shortly after the United Nations decided to partition the British mandate of Palestine on May 14, 1948. President Truman recognized Israel as an independent country only 11 minutes after its declaration, which initiated America and Israel’s close relationship.

"When the Israeli state began, it was a refuge for Holocaust survivors. In a short time, it became a home for Jewish people from around the world. It quickly developed a strong economy and became a leader in the areas of development, scientific technology and academic learning," said Frankel, chairman of the Allegheny County Democratic Delegation in the House.

Like the United States, Israel is a nation of immigrants. Since its inception, Israel’s population has grown five-fold and despite its small size, the country has absorbed millions of immigrants from more than 100 countries. Its current 7.1 million residents represent a mosaic of people with varied ethnic backgrounds, religions, cultures and traditions.

Frankel said that despite the fact that neighboring countries have been attacking Israel for years, the country remains strong. Even to this day, terrorist organizations engage in frequent rocket assaults from Gaza and other tactics of fear and intimidation.

"The relationship between Israel and the United States has been steadfast through these 60 years. I am proud to have been the prime sponsor for this resolution recognizing this important anniversary," Frankel said.
