House passes resolution honoring McMutrie sisters

HARRISBURG, May 27 – A state House resolution sponsored by Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny, honoring sisters Ali and Jamie McMutrie for their heroic efforts in bringing 54 Haitian orphans back to the United States to be united with their adoptive families was adopted by the House this week.

"The McMutries moved from Ben Avon four years ago to care for the children at the BRESMA orphanage in Port-au-Prince," Deasy said. "In the wake of the devastating earthquake on Haiti, the sisters contacted family, and Internet support began to spread the word of their desperate situation with the children."

Deasy said help came from Pennsylvania, as Gov. Rendell, along with other leaders and doctors, brought the orphans and the McMutries to Pittsburgh. The original flight back from Haiti touched down at Pittsburgh International Airport on Jan. 19, but Jamie McMutrie stayed behind to escort the final orphan, a young girl, and both of them arrived in Pittsburgh on Jan. 20.

"They never gave up on even one of the children, and they deserve most of the credit for accomplishing this seemingly impossible mission," Deasy said.
