Petrone to offer resolution commemorating D-Day
HARRISBURG, June 2 – State Rep. Thomas Petrone, D-Allegheny, announced today that he plans to introduce a resolution in the state House of Representatives commemorating D-Day on June 6.
On June 6, 1944, the Allied Forces invaded Normandy, France to begin the liberation of mainland Europe from Nazi control during World War II. The operation was the largest single-day invasion in history, with more than 130,000 troops storming the French shores.
"The D-Day operation took many lives, but the mission dealt a debilitating blow to German forces," Petrone said. "So on this anniversary of D-Day, I'd like to take time to remember the service members who fought so bravely for freedom."
Troops began their assault on D-Day overnight by sky, with parachute and glider landings, air strikes and naval attacks. In the early morning hours, fighters made an amphibious landing and the remaining parachute divisions landed after that. The D-Day invasion ultimately secured a new, major front and ended in a decisive Allied victory. It spurred the beginning of the Allied invasion of Europe during the following months.
This year marks the 64th anniversary of D-Day.
