Vouchers available for senior and WIC recipients

HARRISBURG, June 9 – State Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny, said today local distribution centers will have vouchers available for locally grown produce on Tuesday, June 29 for eligible senior citizens and WIC program recipients.

The vouchers are worth $20 and can be obtained at one of the following three distribution sites: the West End Center, Sheraden Center and the Dormont Recreation Center. You can pick up the vouchers at the West End and Sheraden centers between 9 a.m. and 11a.m. The Dormont Recreation Center is open for voucher pickup between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Senior recipients must be 60 years of age by Dec. 31 and meet income eligibility, which is 185 percent of the official poverty guideline published each year by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. WIC recipients can receive their vouchers during quarterly visits from May through September.

"Both the WIC Farmers Nutrition Program and the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program work to make fruits and vegetables available to low-income senior citizens and WIC recipients," Deasy said. "The programs also attempt to promote the general public’s awareness and use of farmer's markets by increasing the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables."

Each eligible recipient receives four $5 vouchers to redeem at a participating farmers' market or roadside stand.

There are more than 1,000 participating farmers at 800 farm stands and 190 farmers' markets in Pennsylvania.
