DeLuca plans to hold hearing on Highmark's possible outsourcing of jobs
HARRISBURG, Jan. 7 – State Rep. Tony DeLuca, D-Allegheny, chairman of the House Insurance Committee, said he plans to hold a hearing in Allegheny County on the possible outsourcing of jobs by Highmark, Inc.
DeLuca said Highmark is one of Pennsylvania's largest health insurance companies.
"People can't afford to lose their jobs in this declining economic climate from a company that plans to outsource their positions to people in other countries," DeLuca said. "We must work with employers to ensure that good jobs don’t leave Pennsylvania given the great workforce we have in this state."
DeLuca said the issue was brought to his attention by state Rep. Matt Smith, D-Allegheny, a member of the House Insurance Committee, who read a recent Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article detailing possible Highmark outsourcing plans to India.
DeLuca said Highmark employs close to 10,000 people in Pennsylvania.
"I plan to stay involved in this process and to fight any type of outsourcing of jobs that would be devastating to our working families," DeLuca said.
DeLuca believes the hearing will allow committee to gather information on the issue and open up dialogue with company representatives.
