DeLuca reminds drivers to surrender license plate if vehicle insurance expires
HARRISBURG, Jan. 15 – State Rep. Tony DeLuca, D-Allegheny, reminds constituents of the 32nd Legislative District that if their motor vehicle liability insurance coverage is canceled, the license plate and registration sticker must be returned to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
DeLuca, chairman of the House Insurance Committee, said his constituent service office is frequently contacted about possible exceptions for people who must surrender their vehicle license plates and registration stickers.
DeLuca said according to state law, people are required to surrender their registration stickers and vehicle plates to PennDOT if they don’t have car insurance.
"When people don’t surrender the required documents, they face a 90-day license suspension if they continue to operate their vehicle without proper insurance, and drivers could also be further penalized," DeLuca said. "Also, if a person's car is in the repair shop or in a garage for an extended period of time, the owner of the vehicle must maintain insurance or return the plates to PennDOT to avoid license suspension."
The Allegheny County legislator said vehicle owners have to produce proof of current insurance before their license plates can be restored to them.
DeLuca said as a service to his constituents, his office will continue to accept plates and return them to PennDOT and process other driver-related documents such as vehicle registration and title work.
For any state-related concern, contact DeLuca's constituent service office at 793-2448.
