DeLuca introduces family financial responsibility bill
HARRISBURG, Jan. 21 – State Rep. Tony DeLuca, D-Allegheny, introduced legislation that would eliminate a fundamental unfairness that exists in current law – an unfairness that would have children liable for their financially indigent parents in Pennsylvania.
DeLuca's legislation (H.B. 2206) would not make the child responsible for financially supporting a parent and would address situations where the parent abandoned the child.
"Under my bill, children would not be held liable to pay for their parents debts if the children do not have the sufficient financial ability to do so," DeLuca said.
DeLuca said under current law, adult children are forced to pay their parents' health-care costs, even if the adult child is unable to pay, or the adult child and parent have parted ways years ago.
The legislation is being reviewed in the House Insurance Committee.
