House Insurance Committee approves DeLuca family responsibility bill
HARRISBURG, March 17 – The House Insurance Committee has approved a bill introduced by state Rep. Tony DeLuca, D-Allegheny, that he said would eliminate a fundamental unfairness that exists in current law – an unfairness that could have made adult children liable for their financially indigent parents – even after the parents had abandoned the child.
DeLuca's legislation (H.B. 2206) would repeal the provision in state law that makes a relative responsible for financially supporting an indigent person.
"My bill would not make children responsible for their parents' debts if the children don’t have the responsibility or financial means to do so," DeLuca said.
DeLuca said under current law, adult children can be forced to pay their parents' health-care costs, even if the adult child and parent have parted ways.
The bill has been sent to the full House for consideration.
