House passes DeLuca towing bill
HARRISBURG, March 17 – The state House passed legislation introduced by state Rep. Tony DeLuca, D-Allegheny, which would protect consumers by requiring tow truck operators to disclose their business information, fees and charges to vehicle owners in Pennsylvania.
DeLuca said H.B. 2041 would require a tow truck operator to provide information to vehicle owners so that the person can make an informed decision where they want the vehicle towed.
"My bill would protect consumers from being hoodwinked into agreeing to vehicle repairs or delays in vehicle repairs by limiting a tow truck operator's ability to maintain control over the vehicle for more than 24 hours," DeLuca said.
In addition, DeLuca said the bill would help to stop tow truck operators from "wreck chasing." This is a practice where tow truck operators chase wrecked vehicles on behalf of the insurance companies contracted by towers.
The legislation is being considered in a Senate committee.
