RE: Highmark – Outsourcing of Jobs
Dear Governor-elect Corbett:
Recently I learned of the ongoing efforts at Highmark to outsource Pennsylvania jobs beyond our state borders, and potentially overseas. Public hearings need to be called immediately and your assistance in accomplishing this will be critical.
The company’s efforts have already resulted in the off shoring of some technology work to India. Just last week, Highmark employees were asked by corporation management to have the employees’ business operations observed by outside consultants. There seems little question that that Highmark is having its employees tailed with an eye toward further movement of positions away from Pennsylvania. It is important to remember that Highmark enjoys a surplus in excess of $3.6 billion, and that this surplus was built with premiums paid by citizens of the Commonwealth.
Your commitment to creating jobs and economic development in the Commonwealth is laudable and I support that commitment. Allowing the jobs of hard working employees to leave Pennsylvania is simply not acceptable. Therefore, as Governor-elect and a fellow western Pennsylvanian, I would ask that you join me in a public airing of the issues arising from these developments.
I look forward to your response and support of my efforts in this matter.
Sincerely,
Representative Tony DeLuca
