House unanimously passes Costa commercial driver’s license bill

HARRISBURG, April 25 -- State Rep. Paul Costa, D-Allegheny, reported today that his legislation regarding commercial driver’s licenses for military men and women was passed unanimously by the House.

House Bill 347 would require the state Department of Transportation to waive the skills test for a commercial driver's license applicant who is an active or reserve member of the armed forces and holds a valid Class 2, 3 or 4 driver’s license issued by any of the military branches.

“U.S. military members applying for a commercial driver’s license shouldn’t have to go about the regular routine of testing requirements if they already meet the qualifications,” Costa said. “My bill would simplify those people’s lives by allowing the state to issue these licenses upon application, saving time and money in the process.”

Costa noted that states such as Georgia, Minnesota and Ohio have already passed laws containing similar language.

“This is already benefiting military men and women in nearby and surrounding states,” Costa said. “I hope my bill has as much success in the Senate as it has had here in the House so we can enact it in Pennsylvania as soon as possible.”

The legislation is now headed to the Senate for consideration.
