Costa, Gergely celebrate Steelers’ 75th anniversary
HARRISBURG, Nov. 2 – In recognition of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 75th anniversary, state Reps. Paul Costa and Marc Gergely, both D-Allegheny, introduced a special resolution in the state House this week.
“The Steelers have a special place in the hearts and memories of every Pittsburgher,” Costa said. “We’ve lived the team’s ups and downs along with the players, experienced great successes and times of disappointment; so this anniversary seemed noteworthy on a state level.”
Gergely added, “The Steelers have played an enormous role in the heart of Pittsburgh and surrounding communities, and even across the state -- there are Steelers fans from every corner of Pennsylvania. Sometimes it’s nice to have the cross-state rivalry with the Philadelphia Eagles.”
The legislators said that the Steelers are the fifth-oldest franchise in the National Football League. The team was founded on July 8, 1933, by Arthur Joseph Rooney. Rooney bought the franchise for $2,500.
In the past eight decades the Steelers have won five Super Bowl championships, including four in the 1970s. In 2001 the Steelers moved from their home of 31 seasons, Three Rivers Stadium, to their new home at Heinz Field. Former Steelers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame include Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris and Lynn Swann.
