Costa announces House of Representatives scholarship for high school seniors

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 14 -- State Rep. Paul Costa, D-Allegheny, announced today that applications for the 2010-11 Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship, a scholarship program he helped create, are now available online or at his constituent office.

The scholarship is open to college-bound high school seniors who plan to attend a Pennsylvania college, university or career school on a full-time basis. To qualify, students must have a 3.0 grade-point average, display leadership and commitment to their community, and exhibit financial need. Applicants are also scored based on an essay on the following topic: William Penn’s role in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and its representative government.

The deadline to apply is March 1, 2010. Online applications are available at www.pahousescholarship.com.

The scholarship is awarded to two students each year. The scholarship amount is the equivalent of one semester's tuition at a State System of Higher Education university – about $2,500. However, recipients may use the scholarship at any Pennsylvania public or private university or career school.  The scholarship may be renewed for each of a student's four years of undergraduate study.

Students who receive the scholarship also may be eligible to receive matching funds from SAGE Scholars Inc. and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s PATH Program.

The House Scholarship is privately funded by individual and corporate donations. No tax dollars or other public funds are used.

"I am happy to see my efforts to provide funding opportunities for students come to fruition for those who would like to pursue college," Costa said.

More information and applications are available at Costa's constituent service office at 519 Penn Ave. in Turtle Creek. The phone number is 412-824-3400.
