Bill honoring White Oak leader heads to governor
HARRISBURG, Jan. 25 – A bill honoring the memory of White Oak Borough community leader Milton Lebowitz is heading to the governor.
State Rep. Marc Gergely said the state Senate unanimously passed his bill today. His legislation, H.B. 1801, would name the bridge that carries state Route 2033 over Jack's Run Stream the Milton L. Lebowitz Memorial Bridge.
"Mr. Lebowitz loved White Oak and his legacy helped to improve the community that so many of us enjoy today," Gergely said. "I am proud to have sponsored this bill.
"This will give all of us a lasting reminder of a man who served White Oak for more than 40 years as a volunteer, businessman and public official."
Milton Lebowitz was the owner and operator of a local commercial dry cleaning business. In the early 1970s, he became a member of the White Oak Recreation Board and he was involved in the development of the Heritage Hill recreation complex. He continued his commitment to his community by serving on the White Oak Borough Council for eight years from 1976 through 1983. He later served as mayor of White Oak from 1998 until his death in 2003.
Lebowitz's widow said she is honored the legislature has unanimously supported Gergely's bill to recognize her late husband's contributions to White Oak.
"Milton loved his community and my children and I are extremely proud that this tribute will help his memory to live forever," Joyce Lebowitz said.
Gergely said the governor is expected to sign the bill.
