Gergely to receive Safari Club International's 2010 Legislator of the Year award

HARRISBURG, May 12 – Safari Club International will honor state Rep. Marc Gergely, chairman of the Pennsylvania Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus, with the 2010 Legislator of the Year award.

The award recognizes a legislator who has made significant legislative accomplishments on behalf of sportsmen and sportswomen. A ceremony will be held in Washington D.C. on May 14.

An avid hunter and angler, Gergely, D-Allegheny, is active in several organizations of legislators who are sportsmen. Under his leadership, the Pennsylvania Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus has doubled in size to more than 80 members. The bipartisan caucus comprised of members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Senate strives to promote hunting, fishing and wildlife conservation across the commonwealth.

Gergely has authored several bills in the legislature to support the state's strong heritage of hunting and fishing. To protect the state's responsible hunters, Gergely has introduced H.B. 1832 which would allow Pennsylvania to join the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact. That agreement would prevent a hunter with a license suspended in a different state from hunting in Pennsylvania.

Gergely is a founding board member and former vice president of the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses.  He is serving as an ex-officio member and is working to implement legislation across the country that would protect sportsmen's interests and to expand hunting and fishing opportunities.

Safari Club International works to protect and expand the freedom to hunt and promoting wildlife conservation worldwide.
