Gergely, Kortz: McKeesport School District wins Golden Apple Award

HARRISBURG, June 3 – State Reps. Marc Gergely and Bill Kortz, both D-Allegheny, today announced McKeesport Area School District is one of six winners of Speaker of the House Dennis M. O’Brien's 2008 Golden Apple Awards for Education Innovation.

McKeesport won the award based on parental involvement. The program is designed to highlight and recognize unique and groundbreaking education programs in Pennsylvania’s public schools.

"Behind every good student is a dedicated parent or guardian who exhausts every resource possible to foster academic achievement," Gergely said. "Through this kind of involvement, children are better equipped to pursue a higher education or job trade and enter the work force. The parents and students of McKeesport's schools deserve this recognition and I will always work to bring home additional resources to aid in this effort."

Kortz said, "As a first-term legislator, I am so proud to have a school in my district that's been given this honor. McKeesport parents exemplify the type of involvement in education that can benefit every school district in Pennsylvania. I am very pleased and look forward to presenting this prestigious award to them."

The lawmakers said parents, students and administrators from McKeesport School District will participate in an award ceremony with the other five recipients on June 9 at the state Capitol.
