Gergely reminds seniors of Property Tax/Rent Rebate deadline
MCKEESPORT, Nov. 16 – State Rep. Marc Gergely, D-Allegheny., is reminding local seniors and others who may qualify for property tax relief that the deadline to apply for this year’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is Dec. 31.
“People who have not applied yet for their refund under the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program need to hurry, time is running out,” Gergely said. “We recently expanded the program to offer refunds to more homeowners so if residents didn’t meet the guidelines in the past, they may now. I am inviting residents to contact my office if they think they may qualify.”
When determining income eligibility, Gergely said that seniors have to calculate only half of their Social Security income. Under the expanded eligibility guidelines, homeowners making up to $35,000 and renters with an income of $15,000 or less can receive up to $650 back from the state.
To qualify for the program, residents must be 65 or older, 50 or older and widowed, or 18 or older with a permanent disability. The program is funded by the state lottery, not tax dollars.
Last year’s participants should have already received this year's application in the mail; people who have not applied before or those who need help with their applications should contact Gergely’s constituent service office at 412-754-3500.
