Readshaw bill would promote safe gun storage

HARRISBURG, April 24 – State Rep. Harry Readshaw, D-Allegheny, today announced he will soon introduce legislation that would exempt gun safes from the 6 percent state sales tax.

Readshaw said that gun safes would not only discourage the theft of weapons by burglars, they would protect against the guns being accessed by unauthorized family members, including teens and young children.

"As gun owners, we have a responsibility to ensure that only people we trust can access our firearms in the home," Readshaw said. "A closed, heavy safe is going to be a sure deterrent against accident and theft, more so than a trigger lock or a gun rack."

Gun safes start at around $200 and can cost more than $1,000, depending on the number of weapons they hold and special features such as fire resistance.

"They’re a wise investment considering the consequences of a weapon getting into the wrong hands," added Readshaw, who said he will introduce the bill within the next two weeks.
