Readshaw salutes Pa. motorcyclists as they rally at Capitol
HARRISBURG, May 19 – State Rep. Harry Readshaw, D-Allegheny, saluted the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education for its successful Motorcyclists’ Rights Rally today in Harrisburg. Several hundred motorcyclists were on hand to celebrate their accomplishments in the last year and learn of the challenges ahead of them.
For the first time in years, Readshaw was unable to attend the annual rally due to prior commitments in the 36th District.
At the rally in the Capitol Rotunda, speakers emphasized that the organization’s Harrisburg efforts are not only centered on legislation, but on accident prevention and education of motorcycle riders and car drivers as well.
May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and speakers reiterated that car and truck drivers must be aware that motorcycles are everywhere on the roads during the non-winter months and they should look twice before making a maneuver to ensure that they aren’t endangering a motorcyclist.
"I expect that the advice will become even more valuable as more and more motorcyclists ride the highways to take advantage of their gas consumption, which is well below that of many cars and SUVs," said Readshaw. "The ability to drive a vehicle that gets at least 35 miles to a gallon gets more attractive as gasoline prices continue to inch skyward."
Also at the rally, A.B.A.T.E. members were urged to sign up for the annual Ride for the Monuments scheduled for Sept. 27. In eight years, the annual ride has raised about $65,000. The ride benefits Readshaw’s Pennsylvania Gettysburg Monuments Project and the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association. The funds are used to preserve the more than 140 Pennsylvania monuments and markers on the battlefield and for the restoration of the Daniel Lady Farm house and barn on Hanover Road, which played significant roles in the 1863 battle and its aftermath.
