Kortz: Census jobs available

HARRISBURG, Jan. 4 – State Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Allegheny, said the United States Census Bureau is currently hiring census enumerators for the 2010 Census.

"These are well-paying, short-term jobs that offer flexible hours and paid training," Kortz said. "This is a great opportunity for someone is in need of part-time work or who is in between jobs. It's also a great way to learn more about our community."

Kortz said the Census Bureau has immediate openings for census enumerators, paying $15 per hour. Applicants must be 18 years of age. The length of the job may last between 6 to 10 weeks and in some cases as long as 13 weeks.

Interested residents should call 1-866-861-2010 to schedule an appointment and basic skills test. Testing is available at 10 a.m. every Tuesday and Saturday in January at the West Mifflin Municipal Building, 3000 Lebanon Church Road, West Mifflin.

The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years. Doing so helps appropriately distribute billions of federal funds each year for things like hospitals, job training centers, schools, bridges and tunnels, emergency services and more. It also helps determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Kortz said those seeking more information about the 2010 Census and available jobs can visit the bureau's Web site at http://2010.census.gov.
